About this role
The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) works across Britain’s evolving railway to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability. This Graduate Engineer - Rolling Stock role provides holistic insight into RSSB operations and challenges for a safe, efficient, sustainable rail system. You will join the Standards Rolling Stock Team managing GB and international railway standards.
The team produces the GB Rail Standards catalogue and supports Standards Committees, System Interface Committees, and technical Working Groups. You will develop skills in standards, technical research, and railway systems while collaborating with Plant, Infrastructure, Energy, and Control Command teams. This builds relationships across the railway industry.
Daily activities involve drafting standards like National Technical Specification Notices, Railway Group Standards, and Guidance Notes. You will handle member enquiries, manage changes via Requirements Management Database, and engage in research projects. Participation in industry events enhances your exposure.
Over 36 months, you will build a professional network aiding your RSSB career and beyond. With support, achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The role offers hybrid working at Fenchurch Avenue offices in London.
Requirements
- Minimum 2:1 Engineering degree, preferably Masters, accredited by IMechE or IET
- Willingness to learn about railway systems
- Competence with Microsoft Office 365
- Willingness to learn specialist software e.g. multi-body simulation, gauging, data processing
- Interest in rolling stock standards and railway technical specifications
Responsibilities
- Develop knowledge of the Industry’s Standards
- Develop Industry Standards including National Technical Specification Notices, Railway Group Standards, Rail Industry Standards, and Guidance Notes
- Participate in Standards Committees and Standards Interface Committees, supporting and representing RSSB
- Support development of business cases considering stakeholder needs
- Represent Great Britain on international working groups and GB mirror groups for CEN and ISO Standards
- Manage changes and updates to Standards using Requirements Management Database
- Engage and collaborate with RSSB members across the rail sector
- Actively undertake professional development towards IEng or CEng status
